edberg 2011
intro
ok my beef w the abstract carries over to the actual paper, there is still no explaination given about the trajectory approach but they are name dropping it,,,, you have to explain!!
i understand that the intro outlines the paper, but there is A. an abstract that says the exact same thing and B. there is still room for definitions in an intro
this is causing me so much anxiety while trying to read bc i have no clue what is going on
i think all papers, even super specific ones like this should be written with the assumption that the reader has no previous knowledge, at least in the outline. like explain terms before just throwing them around. definitions are important
like can u please tell me wtf "syndemic or trajectory" means ????? HELP
Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health: Overall Issue
2011???????
immigrant population in the US was 44.9 million as of 2019
i do not like these authors. they didn't describe any of the disparities, even from a big picture perspective, this section should have a different title
abstract
“the clustering and interaction of these factors as a syndemic or trajectory has not been well-studied”
minus points because the trajectory approach isn't explained until much later
as a reader the lack of context is confusing and off putting
MY DUMB ASS THATS THE MF ABSTRACT LOL
NEVERMIND
Immigrant and Refugee Health and Health Disparities
better health outcomes for newly arrived immigrants than native citizens
reminding me of a lot of things from the "Can't Buy Me Whiteness" reading
also just realized after reading the little bullet points,,,,,,, refugees and immigrants are two very distinct groups that break down very different racially and ethnically. seems odd to group them together
Why Health Disparities
Factors Contributing to Health Disparities
Among Immigrant and Refugee Popoulations
exercise?
i am confused how exercise causes racially motivated health disparities
do they mean exercise for fun and leisure, or just physical activity that raises your heart rate?
this article is very much 2011
poverty and lack of resources
some of this felt weird, like not racism TM per say, but just weird
Lack of insurance and economic support
Difficulties in accessing health care and treatment bias
Differences in health knowledge and practice
i have some very out there ideas about this section, that i will be keeping to myself. just know i have a lot of things to say about this .....
Migration and immigration experiences including
acculturative stress
Mistrust and other attitudes
FOR GOOD REASON!!!!! some of my commentary on the differences in health knowledge and practice includes this section too
Perceived discrimination
what in the actual fuck is perceived discrimination. if a person of color says something is racist or discriminatory, it is...........right? am i insane for suggesting that? this also falls under healthcare autonomy, if someone doesn't want to be treated by a specific doctor bc the dr is a poop, so be it!
Lack of community efficacy
i don't think efficacy is the correct work. implies the burden of healthcare is on sick people. we arent doctors.
gives "victim blaming" in a way, like blaming immigrant and refugee populations health disparities on the discomfort and fear of the healthcare system...
Lack of data and systems to address health needs of
immigrant and refugee populations:
Resilience and minority health status
The Trajectory Approach
maybe im just being difficult but i find it odd that they kinda assume all immigrants are POC, bc that is 100% untrue
A Model for Assessing Health Disparity Trajectories in Immigrant/Refugee Communities
migration experience
social adjustment
SES
social supports
neighborhood characteristics
health status
health knowledge and practices
access to care
perceived discrimination
Analytical Challenges
multi level model issues
Issues related to longitudinal data collection
measurement issues
data analysis
The Imperative
