499BC, Ionians revolt against Persian occupation, with Athenian help, Sardis sacked

After capture of Eritrea, Persians head south along the Aegean coast, towards Africa
At Hippias' suggestion, they pick the site of the battle as Marathon, as the flat plain would allow them to use their cavalry to its fullest
This is odd as the cavalry were never used at Marathon, for unknown reasons

The Athenians, albeit having fewer forces, stretch their front line to match length of Persians so as not to get enveloped
