Community Psychology
Theories
We use theories to understand the world and are connected to community psychology through social contexts, social change, social settings, and how to support human development to participate in changing social settings. This helps us connect to our communities and correlates to a sense of community.
Behavior Setting Theory is used to express how people can react similarly in the same settings and have the same behavior patterns.

The Sense of Community Theory is used to capture the feelings of what a person is experiencing and use the four main components which are listed membership: with clear boundaries with who is in the community, influence: refers to the ability one feels they have influence on the bigger community and the norms of an individual that guide the practices, integration and fulfillment of needs: helps with feeling connected and the values and exchanging of resources, and lastly shared emotional connection: which deals with celebration of others

Social Climate Theory is connecting to people and their social context and the power/fragility of social settings. This can be evaluated in my own life by how I make sure to perceive how I am being supported in my personal development in a positive light.
The Liberation Psychology Theory is used with critical perspective and acknowledges power and the role of it. It helps with the understanding of the psychologies of oppressed and impoverished communities.
-
The Ecological Theory was created due to social unrest during civil rights movement. There are four principles which are interdependence, adaptation, cycling of resources, and succession.
This connects to my artistic expression of Crossroads church and how the community did things like mini-grants of doughnuts to help with interdependence. It can help with the appearance and want to have more communication with each other and interaction. Also, they would have opportunities to volunteer and this the idea of bringing different strengths and skills to the community from different individuals.

Respect for Diversity
To be able to be respectful in a community you need to be able to understand cultural humility, dimensions of diversity, the complexity of it and appreciate it, and just other cultural considerations. Community psychologists need to be able to have an understanding of the beliefs and experiences so they can be professional.
Race and ethnicity tie into a community and create different ways that communities have their different values, or customs, languages, etc. Also, gender can be used to construct perceptions of what it means to be male or female.
Religion and other things like ability or disabilities can play a factor and having a framework of all these things can create a better community psychologist.
Prevention
This topic is important because overall it reflects all my thoughts together and how all these topics come together to make a change in communities.
The field of community psychology had come a long way and through all the history and positive gains we have made through how we treat other is important. It connects to how psychologists in this field can use history to focus on new ways of thinking.

Also, it shows how we have came along way from being able to recognize how everyone is diverse and their ideas and voices matter. This shows how community psychology is taking that next step to enforce these things and prevent us moving backwards in time.
Guest Speakers
Nocile Armstrong was a guest speaker who talked about intersection of different identities and how we can be mindful of gender in the workplace. She wanted equal inclusion in the workplace and created Redesign to make these equal opportunities for women and men.
They used their data to elaborate on how LGBTQ, gender, age, race, family status, etc. can provide insight and expansion. They have promotion and want to help the financial needs of everyone. The 14 strategies they use can help these individuals with getting a certification. I think this guest speaker connects well to how we have respect for diversity and how we can all connect our different experiences and beliefs. Everyone can bring their ideas to the table and have an opportunity.

The City of Cincinnati Planning guest speakers talked about how as city planners they want to make the community better for everyone so this can include livable wage jobs, more involvement in jobs, etc. The main goal is whatever is going on in the city they have to plan and control how the land is used. This connects to my community project and how on the West End I learned how each community has different councils to do these things and uses the voices of the community to come together to make fair changes.
Tom Vogt talked about how to give people with disabilties a chance and his organization discussed how to foster relationships and this connected to the central idea of how we can have respect for diversity.

Who We Are
Community psychologists seek to improve a community well-being through a cycle of planning, action, and research in partnership with local community members. They do not have a formal licensure.
-
There are non-traditional and traditional ways of working this job and the settings can vary from: health care, profit setting, academic, government, etc.
This job connects to the overall theme of community psychology and how these individuals use treatment to help others.
Privilege
This is the unearned advantages that individuals have based on membership in dominant groups. I realized through this course that I have some privilege over others without even realizing, These things included things like my skin color, being middle class, and also growing up Catholic.
Community Psychologists can be mindful of these things and have to make sure to not have prejudice or discriminate others.
-
In class we discussed how some people have more privilege than others and ways to be more mindful. These things included to be mindful of sexuality, do better on using pronouns that a person uses, and also things like religion and being mindful of their different beliefs/values. My classmates even said things about how gender can play a factor and how women can be discriminated in the workplace.
can uses these principles and connect to them to privilege and work with marganilized groups to challenge oppression through action research.
Oppression and Power
This is using uncurl ways to have authority and restrict others. It maintains intersecting systems of power in the hands of the more powerful.
There can be many emotional implications like exclusion, exploitation, control, and violence.
Power can be used to dominate others and control resources, or even enforce commands. There is also the ability to pursue collective goals and resist coercion and unwanted commands/ demands.
In history this connects to this topic because overtime, we have learned from our mistakes and how power was used unjustly. We saw this with the Black Feminist Thought and every day we need to work on advancing social justice through new strategies that dismantle power in a community system aoorach that benefits everyone.
-
In class, we discussed how people around the world can abuse power and in our own lives too. Hearing my classmates responses made me realize how much power people try to hold over us and others and how we can take action to make a change.
Liberation and decoloniality are two ways to dismantle this power. Since liberation can reclaim it where decoloniality is undoing or disrupting the knowledge that devalues others.
