Lipid lowering drugs - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Side effects: GI disturbances; Rash; headache; myopathy - with possible rhabdomyolysis; elevations in liver enzymes; peripheral myopathy
        
        Interactions: multiple medications including warfarin
        
        PT teaching: may take 6-8 weeks for lipid levels to be lowered. take with evening meal. high doses of simvastatin should not be given until pt is on medication for one year
        
        Contraindications: active liver disease

        PT teaching: can be used together with a statin
- - - - Side effects: flushing, pruritus, GI distress, hyperglycemia, hepatotoxicity
        
        PT teaching: pts should be instructed to take aspirin or an NSAID 30 minutes before taking niacin to prevent the flushing that may occur. start with small dose than increase
- - - - side effects: abdominal discomfort; increase risk of gallstones; decrease in liver function; myopathy; may prolong PT/INR in pts taking warfarin
        
        interactions: oral anticoagulants and statin drugs
        
        PT teaching: typically not given together with a statin because of the risk for myopathy and liver dysfunction

        Contraindications: mild to severe liver disorder
