While members of society, including family members and teachers, model and guide children to behave in what is deemed as
respectful or appropriate, as children develop they begin to want to deviate from certain behaviors and become their own individual person. They often are still learning and gauging how to master self control, which may lead to defiance by not following instructions, refusing to follow through with a task, or question all authority, to name just a few. They are driven by their needs, wants and impulses, rather than by logic or reasoning which is developmentally appropriate.
