Alfred Bernhard Nobel wrote a will a year before his death. According to the will, his legacy will be used to establish a series of awards for people who are "the greatest contribution to mankind" in physics, chemistry, peace, physiology or medicine and literature. On December 10, 1901, the Nobel Prize was awarded for the first time five years after Nobel's death, including the Nobel Prize in physics, the Nobel Prize in chemistry, the Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine and the Nobel Prize in literature. In 1968, the Swedish central bank added the "Swedish central bank commemorating the Nobel Prize for economic science", which was first awarded in 1969, generally known as the Nobel Prize in economics.
