media coverage
Xenophobia to Asians have existed since the immigration process in Angel Island, which later led to the Chinese Exclusion Act (History.com). Xenophobia still is exhibited today due to it being embedded within our government and society many years ago.
The myth that Asian Americans are a model minority has been termed due to the assumption that they have higher and stable income and education. This myth creates a feeling that discrimination they experience "doesn’t really happen or feel legitimate” (Bianca Mabute-Louie, Time).
These hate crimes are not "widely covered in the media and its concerns are not polled by political parties" (Amanda Nguyen, BBC). This doesn't allow information and awareness to be spread as efficiently as it could be to the public, so the general public may not have an understanding of the hate.
Former President Trump has commented on COVID-19 being the "Chinese virus" and the "kung flu". These comments were taken by the public and influenced the rise of hate crimes.
The lack of awareness and prejudice causes discrimination, and in this case it has the ability to cause physical violence in public.
The pandemic has caused small businesses to suffer due to the lack of activity, but hate crimes also cause Asian businesses in particular to lose support. Asian businesses may also experience violence, one example being the spa shooting in Atlanta.
Hate crimes cause fear and trauma in victims who have been affected, as well as feelings of vulnerability within the community(NY Times). Many worry about their own lives and their loved ones, which can cause anxiety and paranoia.
Due to stereotypes and prejudice, other forms of discrimination can happen in everyday lives. Discrimination can happen in the workplace and educational institutes. Culture and language barriers can cause unequal access to healthcare, financial aid, and other services.
Spreads awareness and educates more people in general public! Also can bring communities together more effectively and will be more likely to stand in solidarity and through advocacy.
reporting hate crimes
Victims and witnesses report any hate crimes to Stop AAPI Hate organization, which allows them to track data in reports to spread awareness. This can increase solidarity as well.
