Skill Classification

Environmental Continuaa
Open Skill
changing environment, react and adapt to external factors
Eg: Football tackle, need to adapt to things like other players positions on the pitch
Closed Skill
predictable environment, not affected by external factors
Eg: Breaking off in snooker, conditions are the same everytime
Goal Setting
You should use Goal Setting because:
- helps you stick to your training plan
- helps motivate you / keeps you enthusiastic
- helps improve performance

Types of Guidance
VERBAL

Advantages:
- Can be combined with other types of guidance
- Helpful for experienced performers who can understand any technical language
- Can give guidance during a performance
Disadvantages:
- Less useful for teaching complex skills which are difficult to explain
- Could be confusing for a beginner if it uses complicated language
MANUAL

Advantages:
- You can get the 'feel' of a skill before doing it on your own
- Works well for all skill levels
Disadvantages:
- Performer may rely on it and not be able do perform the skill without it
- Difficult to use in large groups
VISUAL
Advantages:
- Works well for beginners, they can copy the skill
- Can be used to teach skills that can be broken down and shown step by step
Disadvantages:
-Less useful for teaching complex skills, they're harder to copy
- Difficult to show skills that can't be broken down

MECHANICAL
Advantages:
- Useful for teaching beginners, they can feel safe when practising a new skill that could be dangerous
- Helpful for more complex skills
Disadvantages:
- A learner might be unable to perform without it, becomes reliant on it
- Difficult to use in large groups

Mental Preparation
Helps you stay focused, confident and motivated, keep control of your emotions and cope with stress so you can before at your best

Types of Feedback
Extrinsic
- Someone else tells you/ shows you what happened and how to improve.
- Suited for beginners, don't have the experience/ knowledge to asses their performance
Eg. A football player can hear feedback from the coach, who is on the sideline
Intrinsic
- You know how well you did the technique because of what it 'felt' like.
- Works well for experienced performers, they know if you have performed well or not

Knowledge of Performance
- Did you use the correct technique?
- Can be intrinsic or extrinsic
- Works well for experienced players, to fine-tune skills

Knowledge of Results
- What was the outcome?
- Always extrinsic and can include data
- Useful for inexperienced performers, told weather or not they achieved the right result

Positive
- Focuses on what you did well
- Better for beginners, helps them remember which parts of the movement they should repeat

Negative
- Focuses on what didn't go well/ what you could improve
- Useful for experienced performers, provides them with information to fine-tune their performance
- Avoid too much negative feedback because it can decrease motivation
