Disease in Bangladesh
Cholera
Bangladesh is one of the 47 countries in which communities are exposed daily to the risk of cholera.
In Bangladesh there are around 100,000 cases of cholera and approximately 4500 deaths per year.
-
Typhoid
Interestingly the rates of Typhoid in Bangladesh are much lower than the average incidence rates in South East Asia.
- In the region there is an average of 394 episodes per 100,000, however in Bangladesh the rates are 200 episodes per 100,000. These rates however look much higher when compared to Central and Eastern Europe that see an incidence rate of less than 0.1 episodes per 100,000 people.
Typhoid fever is contracted through infected foods and water and these high rates can be down to the high population density of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has the 8th highest population in the world, housed in the 92nd smallest area of all the countries. This results in lots of people sharing food, water and housing space, such as those in Dhaka's largest slum, the Korail slum.
