Research METHODS Pt2:
Questionnaires:
-
Weaknesses:
-
Question fatigue - too many questions and you risk respondents picking the middle value every time - affects validity
-
Strengths:
-
Often quantative repsponses can be easily analysed - speeds up time needed - particularly with large sets of data
-
Increased reliability as its the same question, same order
Structured interviews:
-
Weaknesses:
structured interviews are artificial devices (not part of everyday life) therefore people will approach them with suspicion and give partial or false info
Only snapshot taken at one moment in time - fail to understand the dynamic and ever-changing nature of people's life
-
Strengths:
-
Can be conducted quickly, thousand can then be interviewed
Structured interviews have better response rates compared to questionnaire as you are tied down to answer every question properly
-
Unstructured interviews:
Background:
-
-
-
Skilful interviewers will: follow up questions, problem responses, investigate feelings and motives
Strengths:
-
-
Provides richer, more vivid data - more valid - get big picture and details
Weaknesses:
Huge amounts of data researchers have to be selective in what they publish - may consciously or unconsiously selecting material that supports their views
-
-
-
Focus groups:
Background:
variation of unstructured interview - group discussing issue, rather than just giving answer to question
-
-
-
Strengths:
allows for an in-depth discussion on topics - may spark ideas from people - these ideas may not have been expressed had the interviewer constructed structured interviews and kept tightly to the pre-meditated questions.
shows the researcher the disputes and areas of tensions within a topic that would not appear within interviews or questionnaires.
