Breathwork intervention and self regulation 19/March 22
research questions
Does breathwork intervention improve school performance? Measure of school performance being :
Does breathwork intervention improve self regulatory skills in children ?
Is there an improvement in self regulatory skills with a breathwork intervention ?
Are children more able to monitor and adapt their behaviour to situational demands i.e. are they more self regulated after a breathwork intervention?
Does breathwork improve children's learning
definition of self regulation
capacity to monitor and adapt cognitive structures in order to behave appropriately in situational demands
multi facet construct
self regulatory skills: behavioural, emotional and social
effect on promoting positive well being
underlying capacity to promote a positive trajectory on well being
bio directional
bottom up - automatic processes - limbic system/ brain stem
top down - more effortful cognitive processes also contribute to executive functioning / pre frontal cortex
Vagal activity is reflective of regulation and resilience of of the system ( more adaptability and flexibility in the physiology in response to the environment)
the accuracy in which we interpret and respond to interoceptive information. Greater accuracy leading to enhanced ability to adapt and self regulate
Measures / instrumentation
Qualitative: exploratory research. Gained to understand underlying reasons, opinions, thoughts and motivation around the intervention
Interview s
Focus groups
reflective log / diary
observations
Quantitive : gathering of data with the aim of testing a hypothesis. producing numerical data
pre/ post questionnaires
delay of gratification
inhibitory control
stroop test
HSK&T - behaviour regulation
Identified measures include: knowledge and understanding of mind / body connections, heart rate variability, attentional control, emotional regulation and positive social interac
HRV - if it can be used .. pre post breathwork
Rationale / research design
AIM
The intervention then aims to equip and support children with knowledge of how to maintain an optimal balance in the automimic nervous system. By being more balanced and connected psychologically and physiologically they will be able to regulate and thus learn better (focus/ do there lessons / work ), make better choices
The aim of the breathwork intervention is to provide children with an understanding of the Autonomic Nervous System.
The aim is to provide children with the tools that will help and support self regulatory skills by teaching them to recognize how our psychophysiological state may directly affect physiology , emotion and behaviour.
hypothesis
Hp: If self regulation skills (definition of self regulation) do have a physiological component (mind body). The hypothesis would be there would be a correlation between self regulation measures and breathwork. i.e. improvements would be seen as the intervention progresses
HP:It would be expected that that those children who demonstrate better Self regulatory skills - attentional control , emotional control and inhibitory control would be the most socially successful The hypothesis would be that the breathwork intervention would see an increase in positive behavioural interactions
HP: Over the intervention self regulation should increase : attentional control, emotional regulation and prosocial positive interactions (social connectedness
Hp: Over the intervention self regulation should increase : attentional control, emotional regulation and prosocial positive interactions (social connectedness
