Areas that I might be interested in???
escapist fiction: has it changed over the years as the "wants" of people changed or has it stayed constant?
problem: I am really scared of horror stories
Good thing: Sci-fi is cool
Alternative: Is there any data on what kinds of escapist fiction was the most popular and could that be linked to social events of that time? (Or we could do the reverse and look for big social events and then look at bookstore sales and see if there are any trends to be found)
Look at book sale rankings?
Can cottagecore be a part of this? I don't know enough about it yet
Humour: What do people find funny and why (Or development but that might be too not focused on the english language)
Lightbulb point: memes (facebook memes to genz memes), nonsensical tumblr posts, there used to be best fail videos that people found funny, and people used to like playing pranks and watching other people suffer?
Problem: How do I make this fully focused on the English language?
Another problem: What form? Standup comedy/spoken? Visual/Comics? Written?
What kinds of sources?
#
Corporate marketing tactics
Advertisements: Glamorising xxx>
False linkage of product to happiness
More recent tactic: Corporate Humanisation
"Restructuring of advertising"
Examples from: Advertisements (Video and textual)/ Twitter official accounts
Greenwashing
This is the point with the most amount of sources at first glance
Propoganda?
Rhetoric: Ethos/ Pathos/ Logos
Imperative: "Don't do it" vs "Please don't do it"
Is there a sufficient amount of sources for you to write about? Enough evidence?
Cat 1
:A specific analysis of the language (its use and structure), normally related to its cultural context or a specific text
Most common one: internet langauge
Not sure if I want to do this one though cause there's probably a thousand and one essays about ti already
Changed sentence structure/grammar
literally no punctuation
Using nouns as adjectives "Karen"
Or sometimes too much punctuation like????????????
Or how the full stop went from being a end of a sentence to being a indicator that the person is actually really serious about what they're talking about
Tone

Abbreviations
Cat 2 a
:the impact of a particular socio-cultural issue on the form or use of the language, based on an examination of language use
How does slang become slowly integrated into "formal" english language
What is it that we want to find out by this? Also might be a bit too descriptive and just direct A to B, again not much room for me to have input
Lightbulb: Ok being slang for all correct
Problem: Too narrow, and what types of artefacts will we base this on? When the word is added into a dictionary?
Cat 2 b
:a socio-cultural issue, as illustrated through specific cultural artefact(s) from a country/community where the language is spoken.
Examples of socio-cultural issues?
Income inequality
The Great Resignation
Materialism
Cultural artefacts for reference

Spoken documents: screenplays, radio or television programmes, song lyrics, interviews.
Visual documents: works of fine art, architecture (buildings, monuments, etc), films, stamps.
Cultural icons: fashion items and accessories (as a manifestation of culture), food items, dishes (as a manifestation of culture), brands (as a manifestation of culture).
how vocab changes when society becomes more aware of an issue (domestic violence/gender expression/autism/gender equality) REJECTED
tumblr/ig/news and media..maybe speeches from poloticians??
Lightbulb point: That one Bill Nye post
Issue: Plainly stating examples, seems like not too much room for analysis?
Quite hard to quantify, also hard to justify causation because there may be lots of factors that cause the change in vocabulary
