Biomolecules
Water
-
-
Water as a reagent
-
Water is amphoteric, meaning that it can be both acidic and alkaline
Water is also a buffer, it will accept acids and alkali
-
Carbohydrates
Beta-glucose based
Cellulose, a nonbranched (1,4) beta-glucose polymer that is held together by microfibrils
(1,4) beta-glucose polymer
-
-
Alpha-glucose-based
Starch, a complex of amylose and amylopectin
Amylose
(1,4) alpha-glucose polymer
-
Amylopectin
-
Has a (1,6) bond every 20-30 (1,4) bonds
-
-
Glycogen
-
-
(1,4) alpha-glucose polymer with (1,6) bonds
(1,6) bond every 8-12 (1,4) bonds
-
-
Lipids
Fats and oil
Triglycerides
-
-
Non-polar hydrophobic properties, allows them to clump together
-
-

-
Phospholipids
The phosphate group is hydrophilic (water-loving) and makes the head of a phospholipid molecule hydrophilic, although the two remaining tails are still hydrophobic.
Phospholipids are a special type of lipid. Each molecule has the unusual property of having one end which is soluble in water.
