Russia has now become the most sanctioned country in the world. In total, over 500 (and rising) sanctions have been implemented against Russia - making it more isolated than countries such as Iran, North Korea and Cuba. These sanctions aim to cripple the Russian economy, reduce the capacity for innovation within the Russian economy, and make Russia poor. Thus, sanctions imposed by the west - while specifically targeting individual oligarchs - are aimed mainly at everyday Russian companies - and, by proxy, the Russian people. Because of this, these sanctions will make Russians poor; primarily with the aim of destabilising the country, to encourage civil disobedience against the Putin regime.
