Data
Data is raw facts and figures which on their own have no meaning
Knowledge
Knowledge is obtained from information by applying rules to it.
Information
Information is data which has been processed to give it context which makes it meaningful

Benefits
Less hard drive memory required
Processing is faster because less RAM is required
Fewer transcription errors
More data can appear on screen
Saves time and effort typing in the data
Problems
Precision of data can be lost (coarsened)
Example - Brown has many shades. If they were all classed as Brown (BR), the data would lose precision
Coding Value Judgements
Coding Value Judgements are based on a personal view and can lead to inconsistent results.
If people are asked for their opinion on a meal one person may rate it as excellent whereas another may rate it as poor
