Hyperglycaemic hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome
Definition
It is a dangerous condition resulting from very high blood glucose level and can affect both types of diabetics
pathophysiology
It is a life threatening complication of type 2 diabetes characterised by hyperglacaemia and hyperosmolarity resulting in alteration of the sensorium.
In HHNS glucose accumulates in the blood stream because the available insulin is not adequate for the facilitation of it transport into the cells.
Nursing care plan
Monitor heart rate and central venous pressure continuously and report any dysrhythmias
Maintain fluid administration as prescribed
Strictly monitor intake and output
A patient must follow a diabetic meal plan
Nurse the patient on padded cot bed with side rails up all the times to prevent injury
manage seizures
Care for the patient back pressure part
Risk factors
Having type 2 diabetes
Being older than the age of 65
Having infection such as pneumonia which may cause blood sugar level to rise
Some of the drugs such as corticosteroid (prednisone) and diuretics
Symptoms
Seizures
Hypovolaemic shock
Polyuria
Cerebrovascular accident
