Pre-legislative process
Firstly a period of consultation occurs. On major matters a green paper may be issued by the minister. This is a consultation document for possible new law.

The Bill is presented to the House. There may be a short debate, and a vote on whether to accept or reject the legislation
The committee reports back to the House, and any amendments are debated and voted upon.

The proposals are debated and may be amended and members vote on whether the legislation should proceed.

Laws passed by Parliament are known as Acts of Parliament, statutes or legislation. The source of law is usually referred to as statute law.
Statutes are made by Parliament, which consists of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Queen.
