Tema 6 Nationalism and Impressionism in music
The rise of musical nationalism
In the middle of the 19th century, political movements of national self- assertion emerged in some European countries. Many composers worked hard to develop a national musical style for their homeland.
Nationalist music is characterised by the following features
Use of music elements that identify with composer's home country or that provide inspiration in original works.
It is rooted in cultural self- assertation in countries on the periphery of Europe in reaction to the dominant classical European tradition, mainly German
Use of extra- musical elements: legends, historical events, literary works, paintings and landscapes from the country
Consolidation of program music, especially in short piano works in MINOR FORMS and in ORCHESTRAL PIECES in the form of the symphonic poem.
