Sampling Methods

Quota sampling
The researcher decides how many of each category of person should be included in the sample, but the, instead of selecting the, at random from a sampling frame, the researcher goes out looking for the right number of people in each category until the quota is filled
Snowball sampling
Involves finding and interviewing a person who fits the research needs and then asking them to suggest someone else who might be willing to be interviewed
Purposive sampling
Involves researchers choosing individuals or cases that fit the nature of the research. It occurs when a researcher chooses a particular group or place to study because it is known to be the type that is wanted

Volunteer sampling
Participants can choose to take part/ volunteer themselves
E.g. Newspaper advertisement, email

What they might be interested in -Problem lies when the government and sociologists disagree on what the problems are E.g. Discrimination, Suicide, Inequalities

Ethics
Informed Consent
Before the research begins the researcher must outline to the participants what the research is about and then ask for their consent
Confidentiality
Participants and the data gained from them must be kept anonymous unless they give their full consent. No names must be used in a lab report
Deception
This is where the participants are mislead or wrongly informed about the aims or true purpose of the research

Target population
A target population is a certain group of the population that share similar characteristics and is identified as the intended audience for a product, advertising or research. It is a portion of the whole universe of people selected as the objective audience.
