Primary amine in test tube A is a clear, colorless liquid. Sodium nitrate is a white solid. When mixed with distilled water, sodium nitrate forms a colorless solution. Hydrochloric acid is a clear, colorless liquid. When placed in test tube A, B (containing secondary amine) and C (containing tertiary amine) smoke occured. All of the compounds dissolved in hydrochloric acid. Sodium nitrate solution was added to all three of the test tubes A, B and C. In test tube A there was no change, only bubbles appeared. In test tube B, the mixture turned to a lighter color and an oily layer occurred. In test tube C, a crystal-like structure formed.
