Broader Context.
Progression of covenants in Scripture. Old Testament to New Testament (old covenant to new covenant).
God's nature (truth, justice, holiness) versus man's nature (sinful) (Course Notes).
Man can only be reconciled to God through faith in Jesus (NT). Man must follow God's law and give sacrifices to cover sins (OT). Know what covenant audience falls under.
See how the Scriptures relate to each other in NT and OT themes. Commentaries can help with seeing the relation of passages. Can also help give historical background of the setting and author.
Linguistic Content

Look at word within context of the passage. Look at the usage of the word in other passages by same author and other authors.
Note the relationship of sentences to each other. Words within sentences can indicate a relationship to previous or subsequent verses.

Create an outline from a block diagram of a passage or book to help with summarizing the passage and it's theological lesson.
Historical Context
History
History of surrounding nations i.e., Egypt, Babylon, Rome.
Time frame passage was written along with events (Paul's Missionary Journey, Prison Epistles, etc).

Culture
"The manners, customs, institutions, and principles which characterized and particular age and the environment within which people conduct their lives" (Course Notes).
Many parables and stories were centered around the culture of the time (i.e., shepherds, sheep, "white washed walls," ect).
Geography

Knowledge of geography can put things into perspective such as the distance the Patriarchs traveled from their original home to where God told them too.
