Based on your initial reading, how do you think will the characters overcome oppression?
The characters in the story can overcome oppression if they form a strong connection with people who they are close to and are trustworthy enough to help them prove those who are wrong. But in a total Totalitarianism form of government, there is a high degree of control and regulation over public and private life of people. Since the main character harbors revolutionary dreams together with his desire to gain freedom and be with his love interest (Julia), the two main characters joined an underground group, with the hope to gain freedom from the oppression, dictatorship and complete authoritarianism of Big Brother.
Just like in real life and in history, when oppression is happening, revolution will eventually happen. Although unsuccessful, there will come another time where another revolution will come one after the other.
What classes or socioeconomic statuses are represented? And is there a disparity between them? Explain briefly.
The novel shows a totalitarian government, where one person holds all power while everyone else are part of the working class.
There is no sign of any middle class or a group of people being the bourgeoisie, there is only the dictator and all the people that follow him.
One can say that Mr. Charington is somehow above the lower classes because he is able to arrest and capture Winston. This is to say that everyone who blindly obeys and follows the dictator will be granted temporary power.
How does the social conflict/struggle trigger tension between the classes or socioeconomic statuses?
The Social Conflict triggers tension in the way that it changes one's view of things. In the Book 1984, Winston was against "Big Brother" but once they were caught, he completely changed in his view of life, love and morals. From being against "Big Brother" to loving and praising "Big Brother".
This just shows how powerless and weak the common people are against the absolute power the dictator has against them
Those at the bottom are forced to become reckless and fight against the system to gain back their individual freedom.
Is there an evident social conflict? If so, what is it about?
The social conflict in 1984 is the dictator Big Brother and the oppressive government who controls the truth and information in which they change the stories and the truth of the past in order to fit in with the present and the parties truth, they violently oppress people who opposes the government
Freedom of speech is removed from people and those who try to speak their minds are tortured and punished
