Golden Rule
The Golden Rule states that the literal rule must be followed as far as possible but if the result is absurd, the statute must be interpreted to avoid the absurdity.
Narrow
If there is more than one meaning to a word or phrase, the court must choose only one meaning.

Wider
If there is more than one meaning to a word or phrase, the court can choose multiple meanings

Mischief Rule
This rule gives a judge more discretion than the other two rules, and also encourages judges to utilise external aids to help find Parliament’s intention.
The Mischief Rule is contained in Heydon’s Case it was stated that for the true interpretation of all statutes three things are to be considered:
