RUM 510 Cardio
-
ENDOCARTITIS
Cx, non-specific signs in combination with murmur is suggestive
-
-
-
embolization effects, i.e. abscesses in end artery organs, polyarthritis, vertebral body abscess
-
Dx
-
Is US not available, diagnosis must be based on the suspicion of deep infection, a fluctuating fever, responsive to antibiotics and specific signs of cardiac dysfunction such as murmurs.
echocardiography, supported by the appropriate clinical and blood picture.
Non specific CS (CHF, Abscesses) + Murmur
Ax: Persisistent Bacterial Infection, esp of valves
-
-
-
Tx
-
Tx for early stages
Large doses of procaine penicillin (20 000-30 000 units/kg) daily, or antibiotic as selected from antibiogram, for at least 14 days (antibiogram not really possible in practice)
Prolonged Tx, inform owner
Hx
Poor doing, weight loss, fluctuating fever, lethargy, shifting lamness
Blood Transfusions, Circulating blood volume in ruminants = 8% of body weight in kg
Indications
Acute, severe anemia (due to haemorrhage)

-
Myocardium
Se/Vit E deficiency
-
Tx: Parenteral Vit E/Se supplementation – animals with the cardiac form may still die due to permanent cardiac damage
Cx:
Sudden death after exercise, restrain or spontaneously
sudden onset dyspnoea, recumbency and severe weakness, in the absence of neurological dysfunction,
-
Pathogenesis: widespread oxidation of tissue lipoproteins ➡ hyaline degeneration & calcification of muscle fibres
-
Sx: usually suckling calves, lambs and kids
-
Cardiac neoplasia, common tumor: Lymphosarcoma
-
Cx (other systems)
-
-
-
generalised lymphadenopathy,
-
-
Myocarditis
Ax
Bacterial
Histophilus somni, (after septicaemia or bacteraemia)
Clostridium chauvoei (myocardium are usually found dead with typical blackleg-like lesions in the myocardium )
-
Pathogenesis: inflammation, necrosis and degeneration of the myocardium, fibres that are permanently damaged, will be replaced with fibrous connective tissue ➡ contractility affected ➡CHF
Acute Heart Failure
Ax
Cardiac Causes
Myocardial
Tacchyarrhythmia
-
Giflblaar, gousiekte, Cardioglycosides

CS
⭐Peracute
Respiratory distress, gasping before death
-
Staggering, falling, clonic convulsions
