L7, Creating a king.
NZ government bought land cheaply from Maori
King Potatau fought to protect and preserve Maori land.
Pre-emption sales.
Potatau put a boundary for the Waikato people. This line would show where their land was.
L5, Signing the treaty.
The treaty was signed by 485 chiefs in the north island.
And was signed by 56 chiefs in the south island.
They were a lot of ups and downs (arguments) but a lot of chiefs ended up signing (485)
All of the Waikato chiefs didn't sign.
L4, Leading up to the treaty.
British needed a treaty with Maori because the declaration of independence wasn't working out.
A Chief asked the British King to become their friend.
Maori were willing to learn from the British.
Maori wanted some form of law in NZ.
For protection against other country's.
The british had things the maori wanted
L3, Different attitudes to land.
Why is land important to Maori?
Maori felt like they belonged to the land
It was Maori's responsibility to look after the land.
The land provides everything they need
Maori have kaiakitanga over the land
The land doesn't belong to them, they belong to the land
Maori and Te-Whenua.
L9, Protest at Parihaka.
Parihaka
Parihaka was the biggest Maori settlement in NZ.
It was unfortified and peacful
The invasion of parihaka happened on 5th of November, 1881
Paihaka was built of confiscated land.
Government didn't care about Parihaka until they wanted the land
Passive Resistance
The people of Parihaka didn't like their land being stolen so they peacefully resisted. By this they removed selling signs on their land.
Paihaka's symbol of peace was an albatros
L8, War and Raupatu.
Taranaki war
Both Maori and British fought until it resulted in a truce.
Raupatu, legal confiscation of Maori land by government.
Rangiaowhia
British destroyed Rangiawhia village. It was unprotected and burnt to the ground.
Orakau
The last stand for the Waikato people.
British won but it wasn't a great victory because a lot of Maori escaped into the nearby swamps.
Rangiriri
The Maori waved the white flag to get more ammo but British thought they had won.
