Chris' mother crave attention and always does something hoping someone else notices. She must feel alone after her husbands death.

Part of Chris' realisation that he must have a relationship with his parents if he wants to be happy.
Ironically, trying to avoid a conflictful relationship adds to the conflict anyway.

Suggest mother premeditates a relationship with Chris.
Builds on the idea she wants to attract his attention.
"What would it have cost him to give his father just that, instead of a shrug, just for the small mean pleasure of feeling his father turn away, defeated?" p32
Part of Chris' realisation that a relationship with his father, despite their differences, would have been a better alternative than none at all.
