Categorizing Recycable Waste
Why it is needed
Recycling materials is a useful way to renew what we have already used.
Recycling takes our usual, everyday waste and turn them back into something useful.
Recycling prevents needing too many materials as we are using materials up quicker than we can replace them.
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
Audio
The robot will respond to verbal commands, such as 'scan material' or 'sort'.
The robot will be given a speaker through which it will confirm that an action/command has been completed.
Robot using its intelligence
I will program the robot to learn to recognize items, which the robot will use to correctly categorize the materials.
I will program the robot to differentiate between most common/everyday items, and use them accordingly to how it has been programmed to.
Visual
The robot will differentiate between color-coded bins through color-identifying sensors.
What errors we can expect
The system may misread the information given and incorrectly categorize the materials
The system could have many references yo go back on if it is not getting enough information
Not enough bench testing done
Everything could be tested multiple times along the project.
The code may be missing crucial information
The code could be double-checked by an expert to ensure nothing critical is missing
What equipment is needed
A claw for placing items in their designated areas
A servo could be used
A system to open/close the bins
A pulley/hinge/lever system could be used
A hinge system - the lid of the bin is connected to an elevated plate. The robot drives onto the plate and its weight pushes down the plate, which pulls down the lid along with it.
(The plate and the lid are connected through several pieces of metal and move like the wheels of a train).
A lever system - The lid is placed on a motor, which is electronically collected to a lever. The robot pushes the lever, which sends a command to the motor to move, lifting the lid.
(The lever could also be replaced by a trigger, or a motion-activated plate or pressure plate).
A pulley system - the robot has a mounted pulley which is connected to the lid of the bin via ropes. The robot uses a motor to retract the ropes, and the lid of the bin opens.
(The lid opens upwards, like a drawbridge).
Bins which act as designated areas for the materials
The bins can be 3D-printed
