Biology 5th Bimester
The Nervous System
Function
Gather information from the environment, interpret and react to it.
-
Neurons
Cell that carries nerve impulses throughout the body and is composed of a cell body, an axon, and dendrites.
-
-
-
-
Neurotransmitter
Is a chemical that diffuses across a synapse and binds to receptors on the dendrite of a neighboring neuron.
-
-
-
Types of Neurons
-
Motor neurons
Work from the brain and spinal cord, to gland and muscles.
-
Sensory neurons
Work from the skin and sense organs, to the brain and spinal cord.
-
-
The senses
Specialized neurons in the body called sensory receptors enable a person to taste, smell, hear, see, touch, and detect motion and temperature.
-
-
-
-
-
Effects of Drugs
Drug
A substance, natural or artificial, that alters the function of the body.
-
-
Two effects of a drug
-
It can block a receptor site on a dendrite, preventing a neurotransmitter from binding.

The Circulatory System
-
-
-
Blood Pathway
Then, blood goes to the right ventricle.
-
Next, blood travels to the left atrium.
-
First, blood enters the heart through the right atrium.
-
Finally, blood goes to the left ventricle.
-
Blood Pump
Pulse
The alternating expansion and relaxation of the artery wall caused by contraction of the left ventricle.
-
-
Blood Components
Red blood cells are developed in the red bone marrow, contain hemoglobin, and carry oxygen.
-
White blood cells are developed in the red bone marrow and are body disease fighters to prevent diseases.
-
Platelets produce fibrin, which is responsible for blood clot formation.
-
-
-
-
The Respiratory System
Function
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and the blood and between the blood and the body’s cells.

The Path of Food
-
-
-
-
-
4th: Liver
Produces bile, which helps break down fats
-
-
-
6th: Pancreas
Produces enzymes that digest carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
-
Peristalsis
The movement of waves of muscle contraction during digestion to pass food through the digestive system.
-
Villi and Chyme
Villi
Food nutrients are absorbed from the small intestine into the bloodstream through these fingerlike structures
