CHARACTERISTICS
PHOBIAS
EMOTIONAL: marked and persistent fear, likely to be excessive and unreasonable, accompanied by the presence of a specific object or situation, which the phobic recognises is disproportionate to the danger posed by the phobic stimulus.
BEHAVIOURAL: avoidance of phobic stimulus, interfering with the phobic's usual social and occupational functioning over an extended period of time; fight, flight or freeze.
COGNITIVE: irrational thoughts, resistance to rational arguments, patient recognises that their fear is excessive or unreasonable (may be absent in children).
DEPRESSION
EMOTIONAL: sadness or loss of interest and pleasure in normal activities; feeling worthless, hopeless an low in self-esteem.
BEHAVIOURAL: shift in activity level - either reduced or increased, as well as reduced energy (or tiredness), noticeable change in sleep patterns, and affected appetite.
COGNITIVE: negative thoughts, pessimistic outlook on life.
OCD
EMOTIONAL: feelings of anxiety and distress due to loss of control, embarrassment and shame about obsessions/compulsions.

BEHAVIOURAL: compulsions, e.g. excessive hand washing, that are uncontrollable and persistent.
