8.4 Acid-Base reactions
and buffers
8.8 properties of buffers
8.9 H-H equation
8.7 pH and pKa
8.10 buffer capacity
Buffer: 1. Weak conjugate acid-base pair
- strong acid + excess weak base(partially neutralize)
- strong base+ excess weak acid (partially neutralize)
The conjugate acid reacts with added base: HA+OH-→H2O+A-
The conjugate base reacts with added acid: A-+H+→HA
-
solution pH < acid pKa, [acid form]>[base form].
solution pH > acid pKa, [base form]> [acid form]
solution pH= acid pKa, [acid form]=[base form].
-
↑ the concentration of the buffer components ↑ the capacity of the buffer to neutralize added acid or base.
[conjugate acid] > [base], it has a greater buffer capacity for addition of added base than acid.
[conjugate base]> acid, it has a greater buffer capacity for addition of added acid than base.
