Kea
Description
About 48 cm long
has a large, narrow, curved, grey-brown upper beak.
Mostly olive-green with a brilliant orange under its wings
Adults weigh between 750g and 1kg
Diet
feeds on more than 40 plant species
beetle larvae
other birds (including shearwater chicks)
mammals (including sheep and rabbits)
Scientific
Scientific name is, Nestor notabilis
The common name of this mountain parrot sounds like its call – ‘keee aaa’
Threatened species- only approx. 7000 remain in the wild
Behaviour
Known for their intelligence and curiosity
Social creatures. Live in groups
Not scared of humans.
Habitat
Found in the forested and alpine regions of the South Island of New Zealand
Nests in burrows or crevices among the roots of trees
Culture
In some Māori traditions they were seen as guardians
Used to be on the back of a $10 note
