Philosophize This!:"Nietzsche pt. 3 - Thus Spoke Zarathustra"
Everything in the universe can be categorized into two separate categories. Good and Evil
Zarathustra is the alleged creator of good and evil
Nietzsche wrote a book from the point of view of Zarathustra. to show his point of view that good and evil is not ordained by a deity but is simply a man made creation.
Symbolism and How the book represents Nietzsche's ideals
In the book Zarathustra descends from his mountain to enlighten the inhabitants of a city called Motely Cow. The name represents Nietzsche's criticisms of the democratic state and his view that most people are like cattle.
When Zarathustra brings his ideas to the city the people laugh and presume that he's a street performer. This shows that Nietzsche likely predicted that his ideology would be considered weird and incoherent when people first hear about it.
The main Idea Zarathustra mentions is the Idea of the "Over Man"
there are three stages of becoming an overman
The Camel
Nietzsche believed we were born camels and most people will die camels. As humans were tied with "weights" on our back. These weights are things were told to do only because we were told to do it
This is like how people go straight to college not because they want do but because they were told to by people around themselves
Realization of these weights can lead you to become a lion
The Lion
The Lion is the middle ground between the two phases
The Lion has realized the weights they carry however they must still overcome the "Thou shalt dragon"
This dragon being a representation of all the things a person has been told to do by other people. The defeat of the dragon can lead to one becoming the child
The child
The child has slayed the dragon however this can lead to most of one's beliefs being destroyed.
one scale of the thou shalt dragon could be the concept of Christianity. Defeating the dragon would require the person to believe Christianity isn't real. this leads to a void where the person's previous faith was. This void leads to a belief that life simply has no meaning at all.
The key difference between the child and the lion is that the lion is constantly saying no while the Child says yes at times
The name the child comes from the fact that once one reaches this stage they should affirm life. Not unlike a child at play.
In the end the Over Man is an ideal to strive for and while we may never become the concept of the Over Man we should still try our best to be like it
Misconception that Nietzsche is a nihilist
Ironically many consider Nietzsche to be a nihilist
This is because most of Nietzsche's work is a refutation of nihilism
Nietzsche himself believes that to get meaning in our lives we should always set goals so we can surpass them later on
We should always strive for more and not be complacent with what we have. There is no final destination where we can be satisfied.
