- - - - Facilitated by technology, it is the culmination of efforts by companies to reduce their full time payroll, turning instead to temporary workers, temp agency workers, on call workers, independent contractors and freelancers. In the end, most of these companies morphed into the equivalent of old fashion temp agencies.
    - - There is a crowd-out effect, in which high skilled cognitive workers end up doing manual labour, including cleaning, moving and other tasks usually undertaken by workers with low educational attainment. The endresult is an increasing degree if income inequiality, both because better educated people are geting suplemental income, and because the unskilled are seeing their traditional domains invaded by the apps.
      - Hosting on Airbnb can be a major source of income, but only to those with enough money to own property in the first place. It takes money to make money.
  - - - The growth of the gig economy has gone hand in hand with the increase in the number of workers in non standard jobs, including those who operate as independent contractors in the supply side of the platforms. The gig economy seems to take us back to the time where most workers where labour brokers, as in the, manufacturing stuff in their homes as opposed to the factory.
      - Its an efficient response to the fact that some people own things desired by others, or that some people have money, while others, have time.
    - - Some reasearches have found that the sharing economy helps out those at the bottom of the income distribution. Peer to Peer rental market places benefits mostly consumers, especially lower income ones. This segment is likely to switch from owning to renting. It has the potential to help the economically disadvantaged both as consumers (demand side) and wokers (supply)
      - For most people the money earned in the sharing economy is supplemental income, not the main source of sustenance. Researches have found that providers are highly educated and many have well paying jobs. They use platforms to augment their incomes.
        
        The desire to earn a Little bit of money on the side is often linked to a virtuous cause. Many young gig economy workers use their platform earnings to reduce their debts.
      - For some it offers the possibility to receive just enough income to work part-time, do creative work or pursuit hobbies or other interests, or study. There is a trend towards focusing more on time and experiences rather than material goods. The emphasis of the new american dream is Quality of life, not quantity of stuff.
      - The services offered by the gig economy are successful because they are tapping into people's time more efficiently. You could say that people are monetizing their own down-time.
      - Traditional full time jobs are insecure, increasingly scarse, and filled with employers who wished they were doing something else with their lives. Digital platforms can offer an atractive, flexible, interesting and even lucrative and secure alternative to the corporate cube.
