Factor of Globalisation -ICT
ICT drives many aspects of Globalisation and there is overlap between these 4 main aspects
Economic Globalisation
TNCs and suppliers, money markets, online trading and giving
Social Globalisation
social networks, migration and diaspora growth
Cultural Globalisation
Cultural diffusion, cultural imperialism, world subcultures
Political Globalisation
multi-governmental organisations, democratic movements
TNCs - without ICT, the growth of TNCs would not be as fast and large.
Supply chain monitoring
JIT technology
An example is Marks and Spencers. Each time a barcode is scanned, an adjustment is made to the next order eg. Kenyan Beans.
Outsourcing
Spatial division of labour
Business structures were very different before ICT was used.
Micro-Financial Flows
Mobile Personal Banking Systems like M Pesa in Africa and India allows 10 million people access to their bank accounts and so rural farmers can check market prices before selling goods to 'middle men'.
Electronic Remittances allow migrants to get money to people back at home that they support.
Global Diaspora Networks
Online Ancestry Websites allow people to chase their roots.
For instance there are 40 million people in the world that claim Scottish Ancestry and they can use these websites to network with one another.
This connection can encourage tourism too
ICT and Natural Hazard Management
Can help with mitigation, response and rescue
Radio alerts; SMS messaging; webcams; mobiles
Co-ordination of rescue; aerial photos to analyse needs
