HENRY'S ROOM
lighting
I would have multiple lamps across the stage floor - have clashing with lamp shades bashed and punched
perspex floors of cracks - red cracks - present from the very beginning of the scene - cracks at the very beggining - cracks going from the bed towards the audience -
stage directions, all we know it is a Monday morning - around early autumnal (from knowing there was an initiation meaning it was the start of a new school year) nothing of lighting apart from knowing there is a window and Martha lights a cigarette
silhouette of light - like a bat cave - no sense of light - this secret dark world and only time we see the window open is by Hugh when he enters and sees the state of this 'nest' - this shows the interdependent relationship of both Henry and Martha - no one in the relationship wants to leave their little world - shown by the only reason henry leaving the house in the first place in by being forced by mia
always is on - perpetual motion and placed further down towards the audience - lava lamp - typical teenage boy having this cool lava lap, but in the time set this is very out of fashion - meaning this was bought long ago when they were wealthy - the consistent and constant cycling of the lava, the same fluid movements showing the cyclical nature of Henry and Marthas relationship with the same day to day routine, inanition to martha disappointing Henry again, he forgives her and it happens again, like how the lava falls and rises again and again
lamp facing Martha when turned on - she turns it on to see - she turns away and covers with a pink scarf - to show how she is hungover, cannot look at the light. similar movement of bleach du bois where the lights in Stanleys flat are harsh, therefore she puts a scarf over the light, making it more romantic and soft. showing clearly even through this moment the clear similarity between her and blanche as Martha is based of blanche said by Polly Stenham herself.
grey world they live in - she inhabits - never open to scrutiny of a bright lights constantly dark and observe to represent - only time natural light is used is when it is forced onto them by Hugh
'then it dawns on him' - fairy lights that are red - could be Christmas lights not taken down - also represents the uncomfortable nature of their relationship - intimate and romantic lighting as well as adding a low-level red spotlight focused to light the area around the fairy lights to ensure the audience can make out the paintings - strange umbilical cord from a boy who is trying to discover who he is
-
stage space
small intimate stage to represent the intimate and intense family dynamic which allows the audience to feel as though they are looking into the realistic family relationship
thrust stage - audience on all three sides of the stage to create an awkwardness and intenseness as though the audience is surrounding and diving into this family's drama
-
in this scene I would have upstage to the right a door frame - not a full door there to show how Henry may leave the room to help martha but never really does as he never really leaves martha
when talking about light - use a gobo and have an orange light over them and have the shadows of the metal bars across them to show how there is a window
-
there would be a red cord across the back wall and from this red cord there is things clipped onto it
there could be art work from tortured artists such as Edward dunstun the scream, to represent how both martha and Henry who have a love for art, are both tortured, Henry is tortured by Martha and Martha by her addiction
the red cord can represent the umbilical cord to represent the relationship between Martha and Henry - this can show the physical connection between mother and son that is normally broken however Martha and Henry have this naturalistic connection that should have been broken ages ago like an umbilical cord
a fishbowl with no fish to represent how his childhood has ended - he can't care for anything else but martha
-

symbolism
I would have a circular bed on the trap door a meter above the original stage to show physically how difficult it his to leave the bed and get away from martha - such as when Henry leaves her for the night
was inspired by Tracy emu - stored stuff in jelly and I would do the same thing below the bed filled with Martha's obsessions such as wine bottles, pill bottles, cigarettes, water-coloured paintings and little more solid dolls to show her obsession with henry - all objects would giant sized.

-
tangled relationship - henrys paintings all over the room however there would be paintings of Henry and drawings of Henry and martha together when he was younger to represent their wealth
