Electricity Alex and Antonella
ELECTRICITY
: is a form of enenrgy that lets electrons move from one atom to another
Electric current
(corriente eléctrica): Is the flow of electrons from one atom to another inside a conductive material.
Electrical energy
(energía electrica): is the most common form of energy. It can be trnsformed into many other forms of energy.
Heat
: When electrons move mthrough a conductor or load device, they create friction whit the material as they pass through, which produces heat.
Motion
: We can also convert electricity to motion using a motor. The effect we obtain is a rotary motion.
Ligh
t: we can convert electricity to light through load devices.
Sound
: We can use electrical energy to transmit sounds through microphones and we can produce sound effects through sirens, buzzers and bells.
ATOMS
: small particles.
Neutrons
(neutral charge)
Electrons
(negative charge)
Proton
(positive charge)
Insulators
: Materials that do not let electric curret flow through them.
Conductors
: Materials that let electric current flow through them.
STATIC ELECTRICITY
: is a phenomenom caused by the accumulation of charge in a material.
To rub
: Repeatedly pass one thing over another with force.
Cloth
: Piece of cloth.
At rest
: when they are not functioning.
Electric circuit
: series of interconnected components that an electric current flows through to produce an effect.
Conductors
: Transport electrical energy.
Wire
: the component that the electric current folws through.
Load devices
: Recive electrical energy.
Motor
: convert electrical energy to kinetic energy.
Lamp
: converts electrical energy to light energy.
Buzzer
: convert electrical energy to sound energy.
Resistor
: Load deice that opposes the flow of the electric current. Converts electrical energy to heat energy.
Power sources
: Components that supply the necesary electrical energy in order to move the electrons.
Cell
: Supplies electrical energy to the rest of the circuit.
Battery
: A grouped set of cells.
Control devices
: Devices that regulate the circuit.
One-way switch
: It opens or closes the circuit when they are pressed.
Two-way switch
: They have two positions. When we press them, they charge from one position two the other.
Push switch
: It opens and closes the circuit but only while the button is pushed.
Closed circuit
: Is when the energy of the power source reaches the load devices, so the elecctric current flows.
Open circuit
: Is when the energy of the power sourves cannot reach the load devices. So the electric current cannot flow.
Short circuit
: Occurs when the electric current is transported by the wires without passing through a load device.
Circuits can have different characteristics depending on how we arrange the load devices:
Parallel circuit
: the load devices are connected on different branches of the wire.
Series-parallel combination circuit
: these circuits contain devices connected in series and in parallel.
Series circuit
: all the components are conected one after the other. This way, all the current flows through all the load devices.
ENERGY AND THE ENVIROMENT
Tips on responsible energy use
:
Use certain domestic appliances only when they are full.
Replace old electrical appliances with more efficient ones ( consume less energy) labelled ''class A''
Replace incandescent bulbs with low energy bulbs.
Always swich off electronic equipment.
The use of
renewable energies
is being promoted as a green alternative to conventional power stations.
When we
save energy
, we save money too but more importantly, we save natural resources and help to protect the environment.
