Art Styles
Realism
It is the "natural" depiction of something without any other elements. It looks like it would look in real life or what we see with our eyes. Can have less emotion since it is meant to resemble real life. Usually it is not very expressive unless the scene being expressed is expressive.
Surrealism
Illogical or unreal scenes of life that represent what is going through the artist's mind. It tends to look like a dream or a chaotic scene. Surrealism is a more modern genre of art and it can be difficult to understand or take in because of the confusion.
Abstract
Does not clearly represent the visual world and focuses more on the emotion. Abstract art is art that does not depict a very clear or defined image of reality. It uses shapes, colors, and gestural marks. The difference between abstract and other types of art is the robust look and the raw emotion shown through color and shapes mostly.
Impressionism
A type of art style that uses small or thin brush strokes to represent an idea. It is usually not very realistic but it is an "impression" of a real life scene. Usually it has a more light hearted emotion or muted emotions such as sadness. The textures shine through a lot.
Medium
Watercolor
A type of pigment that can be dissolved by water and made into a pigmented liquid. Watercolors can be layered which means it is best to go with lighter colors and keep layering. They can also blend which makes them good for realism and slightly abstract art.
Acrylic Paint
A fast drying paint that is mostly made of acrylic polymer and pigments. Acrylic paint is one of the most common paints used because it dries fast, unlike oil paint, and it can be very pigmented. They are multi-purposeful and used in a variation of art styles.
Oil Pastel
A type of oil and wax based stick that has different types of pigment in it (they are non -drying). Oil pastels can be used for realism, abstract art. impressionism. They are especially good for realism and impressionism because of how well they can blend and because of their distinct stroke shape.
Graphite
Graphite isa crystalline carbon that is commonly found in pencils. Value can be used with graphite since graphite is gray and value can add shadows/highlights. It is commonly seen blended and is very expressionistic.
Sculpture
A form of art using a physical 3D mass that can express a person, emotion, object, etc. Sculpture are mostly used to represent existing objects or people but they can be ones own artistic expression.

I want to create a portrait that can encapsulates a person evidently as well as change. It would be clear that it is a person but it would also resemble or express a change in my own life or the world. This can also be sort of a social however the main focus is the portrait.
