Process of referral at my school by Shea Pendleton
1) Recognizing students who need additional help
Student is disengaged, withdrawn, or causing major issues and distractions in class
Doesn't complete assignments and often does poorly on quizzes and tests
Acts out or completely shuts down when corrected or asked to work with others
2) Working with Korean staff
Contact students Korean homeroom teacher
Korean staff will speak directly with students (this usually involves threatening punishment if they don't start "acting right" in class
Convince K-staff to call parents when nothing changes with problem students or students who are struggling (this almost never works/happens)
3) Teacher's response
Pair high/low level students together
Provide multiple explanations + include pictures or videos with subtitles
Illicit answers from other students; this has helped tremendously because it allows students to hear answers from other students in ways that they can better understand (more simply explained)
Every so often, I've allowed a student to work on a group assignment alone because they genuinely refuse to work with others. This way, they at least do the work!
Check on + provide additional help to those struggling with assignments and projects
Address students issues/struggles on report cards and hope Korean staff don't change them or leave information out when talking with parents about their child (this almost always happens at our academy)
4) Referral process
Contact Korean staff about behavioral or issues requiring more help in class
File a report or complaint about said student addressing any special needs you believe they may have or behavioral problems shown in class
Follow up through email or in-person after filing a report; otherwise, you'll never hear back from anyone
Express only feelings of concern for the student and ignore issues caused for teachers that arise from the situation. I've noticed that if I focus more on the needs of the student and not the problems or help teachers need because of what's happening, we're at least taken a bit more seriously than if we express how difficult it is for teachers to have students with special needs when we're not properly trained or aided to teach them
Nothing has ever been done in cases where I've fought for my students to get the help they need, or teachers so just try your best to handle things on your own in class
