"Philosophize This!":Nietzsche pt. 2 - The Will to Power
Why do humans do what they do?
Many people choose to do things for the sake of making them happy. Perhaps everyone deep down only does things for the sake of making themselves happy.
Some would argue with that and say that their drive to do what they do is altruistic. That their actions are driven purely from a want to serve others.
However many counter this point by saying that the people who believe their drive is altruism are really just driven by the happiness they gain from being altruistic thus making them still a part of the first group.
Some counter this by posing the question of: If people really do only do things for the sake of making themselves happy why do they do things that make them unhappy? Things like scrolling your EX's social media are an example of this.
If neither of these are true what motivates people?
Schopenhauer believed it was the will to survive.
Basically our negative emotions we feel can be motivators for us to do the right actions because the negative feelings we can have as a consequence for our actions will make us be more careful or think twice about doing those actions.
This Idea isn't full proof however as if the will to survive was the main motivator why would people engage in dangerous activities like Skydiving or basejumping?
Nietzche Believed the primary motivation is "the will to power"
"The will to power" basically represents self expression. Being your true self.
Every being wants to express their true self.
In animals this is more simple as their self expression is more seen in a drive to improve their situation from a survival point of view
For humans this is a lot more complicated due to our greater capacity for thought.
Reality itself may possibly run on "The Will To Power"
Most of Nietzsche's philosophies are built upon the will to power
The will to power is likely not metaphysical. Nietzsche was never really a fan of speculation with no basis behind it.
"The Will To Power" isn't just what most people consider power.
The will to power is really the concept of overcoming adversity when you break it down to it's fundamentals
Both an insanely wealthy person and a hermit can both represent the will to power as they likely had to overcome adversity to achieve their states of happiness
Overcoming your adversity leads to power which in this case means Self Expression
Every being in the world is exerting it's "Will To Power"
Usually this means our will's to power do not coincide
In the end Humanity can not control the external world. However we can control the internal world.(This is not a new concept)
This leads to many philosophies with the goal of reaching a form of enlightenment where you are detached from the physical realm. The speaker likens it to not batting an eye at the death of your firstborn.
Nietzsche argues that this shouldn't be the ideal
Accepting that you can't do anything about your situation is not the correct way to live your life
As humans always want more they can never be satisfied. Thus they should always strive and chase their goals
But doing things like this can bring pain and hardship...
Nietzsche believes that despite this you must still face this pain and hardship or you'll never achieve your goals
