Characteristics of a Social Sciences educator
Rich content knowledge in Geography and History
History and Geography are both related, however in the CAPS document for senior and intermediate phases, the components of the two subjects must be kept seperate
It is imperative that the educator is willing to develop content knowledge in both areas, to facilitate learning and make corrrect correlations between History and Geography.
Content knowledge- disciplinary knowledge or subject matter.
Educators should collaborate with one another with an ubuntu based relationship to learn new knowledge.
The educator should not recite to learners encyclopedic information but rather convey little useful information to learners for a sound understanding of the topic. Both the educator and learners should learn from each other with interaction.
The educator of Social Sciences should be a lifelong learner to keep up with the change of information sources etc and provide learners with the education they will benefit from.
A wide general knowledge
Capture the interest of the class by integrating the community situations in the class topic in both History and Geography.
In order to provide relevant examples, it is important to take interest in the topic to be taught to help learners apply their learned knowledge.
Educator should make the content easier to understand
Students should be able to connect their everyday lives, oppurtunities to the subject matter and take on the role of civic particiation where possible.
Making use of various sources of information such as newspapers, internet etc.
Strong conceptual understanding
Educators need to understand the relationship between content and thinking processes
First order concepts- organise content topics
Educators should have strong conceptual understanding to help learners to understand.
Second order concepts- aids in making meaning of the content and the processes connected to it. Relatingprior knowledge and lved experiences assist learners in empathising historically.
Good understanding of human interaction
The interaction in the classroom should be related to them world that the learners study in.
The educator should instill the values and understanding of ubuntu in the learners to ensure that learners feel a sense of identity and contribute towards their participation in the community.
The educator should have a sound understanding of how human beings interact with one another and the environment around them. Therefore, the educator should establish a classroom that encourages this.
The Social Science educator should have a sense of empathy as the process of teaching and learning is a process of human interaction and learners should feel involved in decisions to motivate their learning and become purposeful citizens.
An open mind to multiple perspectives
It is imperative for the educator acknowledge diferent perspectives from learners in the classroom so learners have a sense of belonging where their diversity is valued and they have freedom of expression.
The educator, making use of ubuntu needs to encourage learners to work together and share their ideas by being open minded to different perspectives.
Learners should be exposed to contending views about the content within the subject to become actively engaged in collaborating with their fellow peers.
Being able to reply on evidence
Resources should be available and appropriate in order to produce correct evidence such as newspaper articles and magazines etc.
It is also beneficial to 21st century learners to be exposed to technological aspects such as the internet for evidence.
The educator should always rely on useful evidence to substantiate what they are saying and to show learners that it is important to defend their multiple perspectives to communicate their understandings.
Resources should be relatable to learners, challenge them to think critically and educators should challenge learners beyond the textbook and curriculum to establish dominant points of views.
Employ a range of teaching startegies
Educators should use Pedagogical Content Knowledge when choosing the suitable strategies for the lesson. The educator should understand the strengths and weaknesses of learners.
The curriculum guide should be followed to place the policy into practise to teach further than what is stated in the document.
Strategies used by the educator should incorporate ubuntu and engage the learners with content.
Strategies should be creatively applied to the nature of the learners so that the learners learning needs are addressed in the teaching and learning context. The use of various strategies will allow the learners to remember what they have learnt due to the dfferent leaarning styles of learners.
