MAPS -geographical skills
base map
a map that just shows basic information to which detail may be added
for example for a town center- will just show main roads then information from data can be added for example in areas with high crime rates
Choropleth maps
shaded according to a key to show different values ie the percentage of people employed in the service industry across the UK. uses different colors/ shades to increase the percentage.
pros- it is very clear to use and see spatial patterns
cons-
cant cover individual areas very specifically
suggests figures change abruptly at edge of each boundary line where as in real life they will be more gradual
can be hard to do if there are too many changes of figures
Isoline Maps
a way of portraying data, an isoline is a line drawn to link places of equal value
examples- weather map and use of contour lines to show levels of land above and below sea level
pros- useful to interpret general trends in distribution
cons- can be indefinite and guess work needed to see where isolines could be positioned
Flow line maps
flow lines show movement between places ie the value of UK exports to other countries.
the thickness of the line gives the value of it for example the amount of migrants moving from one country to another
pros- gives the direction and size of the movement in a visual way.
cons- can lack precise information unless specific values are given
Desire line maps
desire line shows movement ie the number of tourists traveling to somewhere.
the line is drawn from the origin straight to the destination as the bird flies- not following the actual movement as flow lines do.
pros- shows the direction in a visual way
cons- lots of desire lines may overwhelm the map and make it difficult to interpret.
Sphere of influence map
used for describing settlements ie a town might attract lots of movement due to good services, so the sphere of influence is the area from which people come to the town
can be shown on a map as a circle or oval to show how far people come from
pros- very visual and gives relatively accurate data
cons- cannot be very precise as areas will vary a lot
Thematic maps
compare nations, states and areas on key social and economical topics ie population, health, standards of living, tourism and environment. uses different shades of color.
Route maps
shows information how to get to one place from another ie a road map.
Sketch maps
simple copy with main features of a given map- may be asked to draw one.
draw frame in which the sketch is drawn in
draw outlines of locations from birds eye view.
add main features ie roads and rivers
pros- good visual memory aid especially if annotated
not very accurate.
