Halogenation
of Alkanes - Coggle Diagram
Halogenation
of Alkanes
-
Step 1
INITIATION
- chlorine molecule
absorbs UV light
- bond breaks symmetrically -
homolytic fission
- each Cl atom left high energy
state with unpaired electron - RADICAL
-
-
Step 2
PROPAGATION
- highly reactive chlorine RADICAL
reacts with methane molecule
- methyl radical reacts with
chlorine form substituted product
regenerating a Cl radical
Step 3
TERMINATION
- reaction slows down + stops
as radicals collide + react together
- there are 3 possibilities:
- end product is CCl4
(tetrachloromethane)
-
