Expectation: heavily reinforced by the catholic church

But Yerma is infertile
Their own personality, idea, opinion, feelings and desire are often ignored

their home is supposed to "protect" them from the world of men
But to Yerma, its a prison
woman walking in public alone is considered "indecent"
But Yerma always leave the house alone
If a woman is pregnant without being married, their only option is to marry the man involved, or get outcast by her family and society
The only contact to men that woman were allowed were their relative
marriage are often arranged by their parent for financial benefit
Education an employment
they were shielded from public and often their education is regarded not important
young middle class woman were taught about domestic competence nd the art of modesty
although the only profession for this class is an elementary teacher
other profession are available for lower class such as agriculture labourers, textile sweatshop, tobacco industry, wet nurse or prostitution
Religion
Virgin Mary was the example for all women to follow. Symbolising subservience, sacrifice, maternal respectability and virtue
women were expected to be more devoted because Eve(the first woman) to sin in the garden of Eden
Women have since been regarded as inferior, seductive, wild temptresses needing to be kept under control by a man.
