        Ali Smith's novel, Autumn, situates Elisabeth's reckoning with what it means to have a neighbor as the microcosm for the much larger discourse of "others" inherent to Brexit. Her assignment requires her "to ask about what it was like where the neighbor grew up and what is was like when the neighbor was my age".
