Immune System Merari Hernandez Per:5
First Line of Defense
Mechanical Barriers- mucous and skin
Functions of Lympathic System and Immune System
carry away excess tissue fluid
from interstitial spaces, eventually returning it to the blood.help defend body against disease
protects your body from harmful substances
Innate and Adaptive Immune Defenses
Adaptive- specific defenses. Accomplished by specialized lymphocytes, which secrete cytokines or antibodies
Innate- Non specific defenses and is resistant to diseases that affect other species. It includes Phagocytosis, Natural Killer Cells, Chemical Barriers, Inflammation, Mechanical Barriers
Location of Lymphatic Organs
Functions
Spleen-Fillers blood/removes damage blood cells/bacteria
Thymus-site of T cell maturation
Lymph Nodes- Filter lymphs, immune surveillance
Spleen-located in upper left abdominal cavity
Lymph Nodes-located in groups or chains along lymphatic vessels
Disorders in System
AIDS- caused by HIV. It destroys destroys important white blood cells and weakens the immune system
Second Line of Defense
chemical barriers, Phagocytosis, Natural Killer Cells, inflammation and fever
Third Line of Defense
cellular and hormonal immune response
Humoral Response
Cellular Humoral Response
doesn't produce specific bunnies
produces antigen-specific antibodies
Antigers vs Antibodies
Antigens are large molecules that that can trigger an immune
response.
Antibodies are created by plasma cells. The five major types of antibodies are IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, IgD. They react to antigens by Direct attack, Activation of complement or nflammation
Artificial vs. Naturally acquired immunity
Naturally acquired immunity is passed down from the mother
Artifical acquired immunity is acquired due ti vaccines
