Lymphatic System & Immunity, Destiny Quinteros P.2

-
Purpose and examples of First, Second and Third line of defense
First line of defense
- Nonspecific barriers preventing pathogens from entering the body
- Alike skin, tears, mucus, breast milk,
- keeps pathogens encapsulated to prevent further passage
Third line of defense
- Specific attacks upon certain pathogens which can either be a adaptive or acquired immune response
- Antigens trigger an immune response which then activate T cells in the cellular immune response to then activate B cells to create Antibodes through the Humoral Immune response
- Antibodies carry a specific pathogen; when the pathogen comes in contact it is then destroyed
Second line of defense
- Nonspecific attacks towards entering pathogens
- Destroys all pathogens that come in close contact
- Includes: macrophages & monocytes
- Pathogens are engulfed and break apart the membrane destroying the cell completely

Antigens and antibodies
Antibodies
-
Produced by B-cells which contain information to destroy certain pathogen/ antigens that are present in the body
-
Reactions
1. Direct Attack
- by agglutination, precipitaion, or neutralization of antigen
- make antigens more suspceptible to phagocytosis
-
3. Inflammation
- stimulation if local infammatiory changes in area
- helps prevent spread of pathogens
Antigens
-
- Any large molecule that can trigger an immune response like proteins, food, chemicals..
- Before birth, body makes an inventory of "self" antigens
