Indirect Biomarkers of Muscle Damage After Lower Limbs Eccentric Exercise - Emeric Chalchat
Performing unaccustomed, prolonged and/or vigorous exercise may result in muscle damage, referred to as exercise induced muscle damage
(EIMD)
Best marker to evaluate the extent of EIMD;
Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)
force loss at 24-48h post-exercise
It is not easy to reach MVC measuerment devices in the field that's why it is important to identify other indirect markers of EIMD to predict
Symptoms of EIMD
Delayed-onset muscle soreness
Range of motion
Levels of ciculating myoglobin & creatine kinase (CK)
CK is the most commonly used marker of EIMD and doesn't reflect the extent of MVC force loss at 24 48 h.
Aims of the study
Determine the relationship between the magnitude of MVC force loss at 24 and 48 hours after lower limb exercises and the time course of commonly used indirect indicators of EIMD.
Examine the link between changes in these indicators and the amount of MVC force loss 24 and 48 hours after exercise (at different time points)
METHODS
3 Clusters based on the largest MVC loss 24-48h post-exercise
Test whether these markers were associated with
the extent of MVC force loss at 24-48 h.
Characterize the time-course of each EIMD marker
Neuromuscular function, functional outcomes, imagery, muscle pain and circulating were examined as EIMD markers.
RESULTS
MVC force loss
The larger the MVC force loss at 24 48 h post
exercise of the lower limb muscles > the longer the recovery
Jump height
The larger the MVC force loss at 24 48h post exercise > the longer the jump height recovery
Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS)
The greater the MVC force loss at 24 48h post exercise > the later the peak of DOMS occurs
CK activity
CK activity peaked at 24 h post exercise for the LOW and MOD clusters and at 72 h post exercise for the HIGH cluster
Myoglobin concentration
Rapid increase and return to baseline for LOW cluster but could remain elevated for some days after exercise in MOD and HIGH clusters
