Organic Chemistry
Alkenes
-
-
C=C (double bond)
-
The double bond can open up to make a single bond allowing different molecules to bond with the carbon atoms
-
Alkene Reactions
Halogens
-
-
When bromine water is added to a saturated compound (like an alkane), it remains orange
When bromine water is added to an unsaturated compound (such as alkenes), the solution turns colourless
Steam
When an alkene reacts with steam, a water molecule is added to form alcohol
-
-
-
-
Hydrocarbons
-
Properties
The shorter the chain, the more runny the hydrocarbon is (less viscous)
-
-
-
-
-
Crude Oil
Formed by the remains of plants and animals over millions of years with high temperature and pressure.
Cracking
Catalytic Cracking
- Heat up a long-chain hydrocarbon to vaporise it
- Vapour is passed over a hot powdered aluminium oxide catalyst
- The long-chain hydrocarbons split apart on the surface of the catalyst
-
-
Steam Cracking:
Vaporise the hydrocarbon, mix it with steam, heat them up to a very high temperature
