Conceptual: How are turning points connected to shifts in power and culture?
One child policy
Government's point of view:
Families who followed the one child policy were able to gain some benefits, such as financial perks and greater employment options.
At that time China had already an outstanding amount of people living in their county causing them to be already the number 1 population on earth
With their population rapidly increasing Deng Xiaoping had the idea to infuse a policy, a rule where families could only have one child in the country not to overpopulate.
This rule was taken into action after the population of China had increased to 969 million in 1980 from around 540 million in 1949.
China's intention by adding this policy was to make the enormous population growth decrease and they successively did it.
By reducing their population in that time caused China to be able to work themselves out and become more sustainable than they were before.
People's point of view:
Horrible things happened when the one child policy was still in effect, causing the population to mostly be made out of men.
The one child policy started in 1979, causing many parents to abort their female childs to have more male ones who could help the parents with labour
If a family had a second child under the watch of the policy they had to pay a fine worth 12 thousand dollars, an amount hundred times the average annual income of many Chinese workers
Many people at that time believed that the one child policy was a violation to human rights because, you should be able to choose how many children you could have
According to studies it shows that more than 400 million births were prevented due to the one child policy.
If a mother of a chinese family had twins it would be considered as a one child, meaning they wouldn't be penalised for it
How is the one child policy connected to shifts in power and culture
Rich families could control how many famlies they wanted by paying the gonverment the fine for having more then one child
It changed the way the families thought about their families because they couldnt have more then one child
Gonverment was in control over the families because they could make the families have smaller families
The gonverment was with the power and decided the most horrbile things for the chinese families
Most famlies couldnt follow tradition due to the one child policy
Factual: What can be considered a turning point?
A turning point is a time at which an important change takes place which affects the future of a person or thing.
One-child policy
The one-child policy was a program in China that limited most Chinese families to one child each. It was implemented nationwide by the Chinese government in 1980, and it ended in 2016.
Why was it a turning point?
The one-child policy was a very significant turning point in history because it resulted in serious consequences to the Chinese demographics:
It considerably reduced the fertility rate
Affected the gender ratio (because families preferred to abort or abandon female babies than male babies)
And it also resulted in a massive labour shortage (due to seniors who relied on young people to take care of them).
Although abolished in 2016 "to improve the balanced development of population", the one-child policy has its negative effects to this day, as the demographics of China were significantly affected by it.
The one child policy not only affected China culturally, but also socially and economically.
Considering that a turning is a point at which a decisive change takes place, the one-child policy is a very impactful and significant turning point in the history of China. The policy is known worldwide for its countless negative effects for the population and the country as whole.
