primary lymphoid organs
-thymus: site of T cell maturation
-red bone marrow: produces blood and immune cells
secondary lymphoid organs
-tonsils: located at the throat and palate, they stop germs from entering the body through the mouth or the nose
-spleen: located upper left side of abdomen, neck to stomach and behind the left rib, cleanses blood and removes ages or defective red blood cells
-site for lymphocyte activation and proliferation
-stores platelets, monocytes, and iron
peyers patches: small masses of lymphatic tissue found throughout the ileum region of the small intestine, they monitor intestinal bacteria populations and prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the intestines
-appendix: located in lower right side of abdomen, may help us recover from dirreea, inflammation, and infections of the small and large intestines
-lymph nodes: located in neck, armpits, groin, around the gut and between lungs, cleanse lymph and site for lymphocyte activation and proliferation
-MALT: prevent pathogens from generating mucous membranes, site for lymphocyte activation and porliferation
